Alexander Rybak: "Eurovision was the peak of my career"

Alexander Rybak, the winner of the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest gave a press conference today at the Minsk Arena as he'll be the interval act of this year's Junior Eurovision Song Contest.

The press conference started with showing the video clip of the Russian version of Europe's Skies. "I really like the clip, it's my first Russian clip," Rybak said.

He was asked about the ability of Belarus organising also the Eurovision Song Contest and he replied with a positive note.

"It's [Junior Eurovision Song Contest] the same kind of a competition as the Eurovision Song Contest, so I see no problem with organising that as well in Minsk," the winner of the 2009 edition of Europe' favourite TV-show said.

"I've said after the Eurovision Song Contest that this was the peak of my career as I don't think I'll ever perform to a bigger audience but it doesn't mean the quality of my singing will be worse," he explained when asked about his victory at Europe's favourite TV-show.

'Very pleased to help'

UNICEF, the co-producer of this year's Junior Eurovision Song Contest held a second press conference today together with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to stress the importance of the issues concerning challenged children.

"I'm very happy to be back in Belarus after being away for 18 years and I'm surprised by the changes which have taken place here and the work UNICEF has done here for children," Maria Guleghina, the famous Belarusian opera singer told the press.

"People are not aware of special needs of some children and they are not aware what to do. The situation with the children is the worst in the world," John Budd from UNICEF said. "I would like to thank Maria for taking off time from her very busy schedule supporting UNICEF."

"The EBU is very pleased to help UNICEF communicate its message. We can see tonight what children can actually achieve," Jørgen Franck, Director of Eurovision TV at the EBU explained.

1st, 2nd and 3rd of July: Alexander was in Tynset.

In the first three days of July, Alexander was in Tynset and here you have a summary of what happened, written by Sandra.

"1st of july.

Around 4:00 pm Alex arrived Tynset with train. A lot of people were waiting for him, but me & my friend, Dena Alavi, were selling No Boundaries cd's and tickets for tomorrow's show, so we couldnt go there. But someone took over the sale, and we got to meet him again before he left to where he's staying :-)

2nd of july.
At 1:00 pm we met Alex at Telstad (Telneset, Tynset) where the musicschool / masterclass was gonna take place. We were six girls, five of us playing violin. I was there to take photos, unfortunately I don't play.
He started by greeting us and invite us in. There were put from juice & fruits, plus chocolate, just for us. Thought, we didn't eat a lot, except when Alex was begging us to take some chocolate, and saying that we had to eat it all.
Then he teached the girls chords on violin. It was cool to watch, even cooler to learn I guess :-)
In these two hours we spent with him we also sung (singing). He said I had to join them when they were singing ^^ And he filmed us with his iPhone.
Suddenly the two hours were gone, and we had to leave 'cause Alex needed to prepare for his show. We took a group - picture, and suddenly he said to me & Dena: "And then we have to take a picture where you are kissing me on my cheeks!" aw :)

5.30 pm: M and Dena met up and went to Kulturhuset (where the concert was). The show didn't start before 8.00 pm. We heard he rehearsal for Europe's Skies and Dovregubbens Hall.
He sang some songs from No Boundaries, and some from Fairytales. He had very much contact with the audience, and everyone had an awesome time :-)
If you were standing in the front, you had to have eyecontact with him at least once.
After the show we sold at lot of cd's, got to meet Moa, Maria and Kathrine (three very nice girls!) and when all the fans had left we met Alex. We hugged goodbye, he kissed me on my cheek, and then he said to us (us being me and Dena): "Maybe we can meet up before I leave tomorrow?" with a smile on his face. We answered "sure!" and then we had to leave.

3rd of july.
Dena got texted by Astrid Hilde (the organizer) and asked if we wanted to meet her on Statoil at 2.00 pm. Ofcourse.
They were a little late, so they showed up at 2.30 pm I think. They being Astrid Hilde, Alexander, Moa, Maria & Kathrine. Alex came out of the car and we talked a little before he had to leave. "

Yesterday I've talked with Frøya, a sweet girl from Norway, who met Alexander a lot of times. I asked her to tell me and to all who's reading right now, how is to see and talk with Alex so many times. And she said:

I've met Alexander Rybak 9 times, last one yesterday, after a concert. I've been to 13 concerts. And it's still as wonderful as you can't even imagine if you're not there in the exact moment. But what's even slightly better, is to meet him afterwards, to get his attention for half a minute. To see him smile at you, to feel his arm across your shoulder, posing for camera. To feel him hug you, and to hug back, if you manage to. I love it. Only problem is ... whenever I'm close to him, I forget everything. I forget to ask how his arm is going, forget to save the feeling of his breath in my face. That's an undescribeable feeling.
Point is; it's wonderful! He's wonderful! I could've written so much more about all this (I have done, many times), but I'll shield you for it.
But as I have met him 9 times (!), he now recognize me. And I won't even try to explain how it feels, or how I felt the first time he said «But it's you! ... Frøya, was it not?». It was incredible.
And you know how he recognized me?
On 17th of may, Norways national day, he was playing at a concert on Aker Brygge, where also the boat to Nesodden - and his parent's - goes. And after signing, posing, smiling, hugging and kissing for a while, he had to go to the boat. Still a small crowd of people were following him, but when he was close to the boat, he had to start running to get it. What I did, was to jump on the boat. I don't know how I made myself do it, but I did. It was me and my friend (who actually was really pissed on me, but she's forgiven me now) and a girl I did not know then. She regreted and wanted to get off the boat, but they wouldn't let her.
We sat down on some chairs next to a table, and I was of course really shaky and positive upset. He was talking to his mother and Kjell Arild, but then he suddenly came to sit with us. He understood we were there just because of him, and he sat with us all 23 minutes of the trip. He talked to us, like it was all natural, and he was so unbelievable kind and open. It was totally fantastic. And now, because of that boat trip, he remembers me.
It's wonderful. He's wonderful."

"Once upon a time there was a poor boy. The only thing he owned was a fiddle, and he brought it with him everywhere he went. His greatest dream was to play for people, and make them smile.
So he tried himself in a singing contest called «Idol». He did not come farther than to the semi final. But he did not give up. Next year he competed in the talent show «Kjempesjansen». And he won! He got a little punch of money, but they went away even before the little fame and the tiny spotlight he'd made himself in his home country. So now he wanted to try himself in another contest. But not any of contests, no, the greatest of them all; Eurovision Song Contest!

Many people wasn't to fond of the boy joining this competition, but he had one good friend. This friend was called Per, and now Per and the boy came together and finished the scene show and all the plans for the song the boy called «Fairytale». He joined the competition. He got trough the first semi final in his country, and then in the real final. So now he went out in Europe to perform in the international final. He won there as well!
No he was famous and popular all over Europe, and soon also in other countries such as China, Japan and the USA. He started his first real tour, and did what he enjoied the most and what he was made for; play for people and make them happy.
He could see the smile on that little boy's face, he could feel that love from that older woman looking at him, he could see the tears in the young girl's eyes. He now lived the life he'd always dreamt of. He got to work with his favourite hobby on full-time, he got to see people smile because of him, he got attention, he got to meet girls. He got to meet lots of cute, kind, cool, pretty girls. But none of them were the dream girl he wolud want to spend the rest of his life together with. He'd never thought about getting married, but he wanted so badly to find that one great love. He felt so alone after he'd lost his last girlfriend, but still could not he, the famous artist surrounded by girls of all ages, say he was lonely. But he was. Deep inside his very heart, he was lonely.

The last year had been the thoughest and best in his entire life. But now he'd given everything and so much more. He couldn't take any more. He broke down. He got 1 on his new single in the newspapers, and he only got permission to play one part of «Fairytale» in this years Eurovision. He even broke two of his fingers when he smacked his hand into a wall of pure anger.

When he is at the stage, performing «Dolphin» or «Funny little world» in front of 800 screaming girls, he smiles. When he afterwards is coming out to give away authographs and is posing for the camera, he smiles. When he willingly gets pieces of paper with the telephone numbers of cute girls he really don't know, he smiles. But when he gets home to his own apartment and looks at himself in the mirror, he screams. When he takes the lenses out of his eyes and gets water into his face, he breaks. And when he lay in his bed and triy to sleep, he is crying.

This was the life he wanted so badly. He still does. He just can't take it any more. He gives too much. He'll have to stop now, while the game is still fun. He don't want to destroy the man he is. He wants people to remember him as the one he was when he was at his best.
That is why he decides to give up on his artist career after this year. He just need one more summer with concerts and screaming girls. He needs to drag out the last spark for his fans. He know they love him, and he won't let them down. He'll miss this the rest of his life, he know that. And he's only going to remember the good times, not the bad. He looks forward to the concert he's playing tomorrow.

This next day it happens. He's playing a concert. It's funny, and today he's in particularly good mood - he shines. After the concert he is, as usual, signing album covers, giving away free hugs and getting personal gifts. He meets many nice people. But when he think everybody has gone, he sees her. She is standing at the end of the fence, almost hidden by a tree. And she can't hide she's looking at him. She's cute, this girl. Pretty. He goes toward her.

From that day on, it is them. They're together.
He quit his artist career, and is taking life easy. They start with eight weeks holiday in a warm country far away. Then they come home, and ... do what couples usually do. They get married. She's wearing a long, white dress and a tiara, he's got smoking. Their wedding song is one he has written to her, a song called «I love you».
So if you truly believed winning the ESC was the real fairytale, you have not read this story, and you are not happily married."

A period before the final of Melodi Grand Prix media told about a conflict between the two artists, but the conflict has never been to follow the two.

- There has never been a dispute. I don't really understand what you're talking about, respond Didrik smiling, to questions about the relationship between the two.

- We have divided the columns, concert scenes and ladies... no, no chicks yet. But we give another push in the back. Of course, we don't hang together before finals, because Didrik had too much to do, said Alexander Rybak.

They both are looking forward to "Stevneplassen" (Fireworks show) in Skien (on June 24).

- We have great expectations. It's paired with professional musicians and everything,
says Didrik.

- Yes, for once, I have great expectations for a concert, as usually. And then there's the audience who have expectations. I'm very excited, there is a lot of forces at work, says Alexander Rybak.

R: Alexander Rybak is out with a new album and the cover brochure offers a lot of lively girl pictures. It is these girls the songs on the album is about.
AR: It is very funny, it's the first day I hold this in my hand. Imagine that Universal is that brave, and dare to go commercial with such a crazy artist. Look at this... it is a pretty nice picture, and it is called "No Bounderies", whatever that means. Then turn the pages and you will see... Dada! Look, a girl! And it is my first kiss, and the song is about her. And it's the first song on the album. And people are going to really like it. And then it's Oah! And this is Moa. And what does this say? Yes, she is so cool that I'm a little too uncool. I sit and she stands, and she is a bit like unattainable. That's what the song is about, and I say "please, I'm not that bad that you would have thought".

R: The new album is diverse in who it's about... and also in the music genre.
Alexander hope that the fans will like that.
AR: If they like to listen to Alexander Rybak, they like to listen to lots of different music. I have a Blue Grass song, I have a musical song, a trance-song and even a rap song. It is not me who raps, of course. And I have punk rock, but everything is in my style and everything with the violin. I will show that one can do a lot with a classical education.

R: Rybak expects that the varied styles, will make it difficult for music critics to find any common thread. But he don't care much about that.
AR: I'm damn pleased. It's going to confuse all the reviewers. They will not understand it. I do not know the dice roll, but I expect to receive a lot like "Hard to be wise on Alexander". That phrase you could read many times the last year.

R: Is it hard to get wise on you?
AR: I myself am not wise. So it is perhaps difficult to be wise on me.

Alexander Rybak. They’re ready to tear me into pieces!

The winner of last ESC is preparing to his performance in Oslo and looking for a girlfriend in Russia.

L: Alexander, last year you said that you didn’t have a girlfriend. Do you have her now?
A: Unfortunately, no, I don’t. Is there someone in Russia probably? I gave my phone number to a girl, but she hasn’t called. (laughing) But I didn’t have enough time to get to know someone…

L: It’s said that you moved from your parents’ home…
A: Yes, it’s true. We live in Oslo, but in its different parts.

L: After your victory in the ESC you became the new idol for thousands girls. Did your fans behave crazily for you?
A: Oh, yes! They’re ready for many things to pay my attention to them! Norwegian girls are distinguished by rash acts. For instance, they often climb up through the window into my hotel room. What lines line up near my room! They’re ready to tear me into pieces! But all that is nice to me! I talk to them, look at their albums with magazines’ scraps about me. Many of them come from other countries to communicate with me.

L: Do they fill up you by letters?
A: Yes, especially by e-mails. After the ESC final I’ve received 1,5 thousand letters for a couple of hours. That just frightens!

L: Do you reply them?
A: I prefer write paper letters than e-mails. I’ve already replied to 700 letters. I sit down and start to write. To be honest, my letters are not long, but I try to pay attention to a person who wasn’t lazy and sent me these lines in the envelope… Not only grown-ups but children write to me, send their photos, drawings. I really like to reply to it.

L: Have situations ever happened when your fans claimed that you’re father of their children?
A: I often joke at my concerts when I see many children in a hall: “Are all these children mine?”

L: There are long-lived rumors that you have a girlfriend, but you hide her carefully…
A: You know, even if I have a love affair with someone, I won’t tell about it at once. Who knows how it can influence on our relations? And the other reason is that firstly I need to understand if she is my real girlfriend or just friend? So if I say: “Let me introduce my love” and then break the relations in a week, this will be foolish!

L: You speak Russian very well…

It has passed one year since Alexander Rybak won Eurovision Song Contest. After last year's enormous attention, he is dreading a little to go on stage in Telenor Arena where he will sing half of Fairytale. According to the 24 year old, this is far from a comeback.

- Comeback, I would rather call it a drawback. It is not any big deal to sing in front of the same 130 millions who watched last year. And I gave 100 percent last year and told my story about a fairytale, but this year it is only a tradition. I have to sing once more, but in my head I am already on my next project.

After the whole world has turned their gaze away from Oslo and Telenor Arena, Rybak will release his new album. In case this will be his last pop album, he wants to show what he is capable of. The album contains therefore among other things rap, bluegrass and disco melodies.

- And even if you do not have to show all the genres on an album, I think this could be my last pop album, and now I have the chance to show how much fun you can have with a violin.

Although Rybak is disappointed about the level in this year Eurovision,

- I see only more trances and clowns,

he is very impressed with the Norwegian contributions.

- The Norwegian final was unbelievably entertaining, it was a real thriller. Many of those who participated could well have represented Norway, and won.

He has a huge belief that Didrik Solli-Tangen can ensure Norway one more Eurovision victory.

- In comparison with the other artists this year, I think he has a very good chance. I like him and German, the lady there is fantastic. I would like to invite her for dinner.

Alexander Rybak (23) has made a new song and music video with Nesodden trio "Opptur". The song is called "Fela Igjen" ("Fiddle back").

In the music video Rybak go back in time, and plays himself as hopelessly in love with a teenager. We'll see him in a bar over the body with pimples on his forehead as he stands before the mirror and trying to make himself ready for a date - with mixed results.

"The song and the video is about how much bad luck I have with womens. I've simply not enough money to keep them", said Melodi Grand Prix star to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

The song "Fela Igjen", Rybak made it with his three childhood companions: Anders Krohn, Morten Friis-Lund and Thomas Wærnes. The three boys form the group "Opptur". The video for the song is recorded on Nesodden and Frogn.

"Alexander has made the melody and then we tell our story about him", says Anders Krohn, who made the first verse.

After only one day, on the internet, Alexander Rybak and Opptur, with the ironic song about failed checking, had tens of thousands views.
